Hi, I'm Simon

I'm a psychotherapist, counsellor and counsellor educator, as well as a professional performer of 30 years. I'm also undertaking research at USYD into stage fright for performers, so mental health and wellness concerns for this industry are a top priority for me.

Simon van der Stap holds a Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy and a Post Graduate Diploma of Counselling with extensive experience in substance use disorders and co-occurring anxiety disorders. In 2025 he is set to commence a research degree exploring the link between stage fright and substance use for Australian theatre actors and theatre students. Simon’s other clinical interests in his private practice include workplace health and bullying, depression, assertive communication training and helping clients to manage sudden, life-changing events. He has also been a teacher, trainer, facilitator and coach for 30 years, and is currently teaching first year Bachelor of Counselling and Bachelor of Psychological Science (Counselling) students at ACAP University College in Sydney.  

 

As a performer, Simon is a NIDA Acting graduate and has worked extensively in musical and commercial theatre, film and television for 3 decades, touring numerous times both nationally and internationally with The Lion King, How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular, The Gruffalo and many others. Simon has also taught extensively as an acting and audition coach and has a keen interest in mental health and wellness for performing arts students.
